Opera is, for many people, the stuff of dreams – of the immediate power of song and the universal language of music that connects everyone. Does this timeless powerhouse of emotions really have the potential for unbounded understanding? Should everyone finally learn to sing arias?

For “A Singthing”, music theatre duo Hofmann/van Bebber have developed an evening of arias, together with percussionist Sabrina Ma, actress Athina Lange and visual artist Ladislav Zajac. With dramatic faces and pulsating lights, grand gestures and palpable sound waves, they present possibilities of multisensory musical encounters.

“A Singthing” is part of “[in]operabilities” – an engagement for Hamburg-based artists Benjamin van Bebber, Leo Hofmann, Franziska Henschel and Jeanne Charlotte Vogt to conduct open artistic research. “[in]operabilties” questions opera as an art form in terms of accessibility, the possibility of working inclusively, and the usefulness of “opera-abilities” for coexistence. Over three years, productions are created and accompanied by intensive research, collegial exchange, networking and workshops.
