What transpires within the bodies of musicians when they play? How does the music enter the body, penetrate it, make it vibrate, move, bring it into resonance with the score through this simultaneously inert and living object: the instrument? In "IN YOUR HEAD", choreographer Pol Pi and the soloist ensemble Kaleidoscope take on Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet, revealing an “embodied” music. Shostakovich's score finds both a musical and yet a precise, physical realisation that equally incorporates the performers' breath, movement and affects into highly personal interpretations of the piece. In the interplay between staves and gestures, solo and quartet, silence and the rhythm that links it, a subtle choreography unfolds that makes the music as visible as the movement audible.

During his two-week "Corps Espace Temps" residency at the Radialsystem in spring 2022, Pol Pi deepened his artistic focus in collaboration with musicians from the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop and developed the concept for "IN YOUR HEAD".

Biographien

Pol Pi is a transmasculine choreographer and performer from Brazil who has resided in France since 2013. His work revolves around questions of memory, translation and the notion of archive in dance. During his residency at Radialsystem, he and cellist Sophie Notte will explore the tensions and energies that seize and flow through a person's body when playing an instrument, and how this intensity can be translated into movement and dance. Pol Pi's work has been performed internationally; his most recent works include "beauty is accessory" (2021), "daté-e-s" (2020) and "Me too, Galatée" (2018).

Founded in 2006 in Berlin, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop has since its inception dedicated itself to the development of new forms of experimental music theater. With great openness, the ensemble creates new formats in collaboration with international artists from other genres and stages music in current contexts. In recent years, the focus of the ensemble's work has shifted to an examination of the body. The members of the ensemble have developed from pure instrumentalists to musical performers and co-authors of these collaborative productions. Kaleidoskop understands music theater as a place of encounter, community and as a place that has the power to imagine other futures.
