On 11 March 2023, Sasha Waltz & Guests perform the world premiere of “Beethoven 7” at Radialsystem. This two-part event features choreography by Sasha Waltz to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th symphony as well as that of a commissioned piece by contemporary composer Diego Noguera.
In “Beethoven 7”, Sasha Waltz and her 13-person ensemble use the entirety of “Symphony No. 7 in A Major (Op. 92)”. Diego Noguera’s "Freiheit/Extasis" (“Freedom/Extasis”) comprise electronic sounds that emerge during the process of creation. The choreographer weaves threads and thoughts that play a role in Beethoven's 7th Symphony and continue to do so in the 21st century, as she searches for a current answer to the composer's pressing questions.
In June 2021, Sasha Waltz had already developed a choreography to two movements of Ludwig van Beethoven's 7th symphony at the site of the ancient temple of Delphi as part of the European cultural channel ARTE’s Beethoven Day, "Through Europe with Beethoven". She has not let go of the music ever since.
In 1812, Beethoven wrote the following question in his diary: “[I]s the real, true human being a slave to their surroundings, or are they free?” He sees, disheartened, the political idea of freedom fail between the French Revolution and European Restoration. At the same time, his work is a formative expression of an aesthetic idea of artistic freedom.
