Duration ca. 180 minutes.

As the duo User Syndrome, the circuit-bending Beirut-based artist Rhéa Dally and improvising lyricist Freya Edmondes aka Elvin Brandhi will jump from their free-fall of failing reality internalistion to interrogate “Sustain“ with a work titled “IRL IRL IRL IRL IRL IRL IRL IRL“. What does it mean to sustain an instrument and how do we let go of the need to sustain a tool? We think in terms of sustaining any thing out of fear of losing it tomorrow, but how would we use these things if we didn’t fear tomorrow? How would we sustain today?

“Inverted Vertigo“ is the second output in an ongoing collaboration between Heith and Berlin-based visual artist duo DECLINO. Combining installation and live performance, the project explores the ritualistic dimensions of live music through an audiovisual show, where the audience plays the role of viewer and active participant. The stage has historically been a place for new fictions to emerge – worldbuilding requires magical thinking, but it’s also a space for collective imagination to summon new realities. Through an oracular totem that sits in the centre of the room, the show collapses the boundaries between real and imagined, summoning new psychic dimensions through dreamlike encounters. Between mesmerising and ritualistic soundscapes, Heith invites the audience to this journey, to pass along messages between ourselves, to move away from hierarchical and into the communal and conjure cosmologies beyond what we see.

Biographien

Circuit-bent poetics and deviated sonics hacking the potentiality of sound to create a digital vocabulary through Cyber de/constructions: Beyond communication. Beyond the flesh. The embrace of the digital, the rush in your e-veins as language mutates into overdrive. A synthetic otherworld where even tears flicker like jewels. No installation or hard disk required - simply jack in to the realm of the duo User Syndrome.

Bewilder your body with the bafflingly textured melodies of the Haunter Records boss Heith. The sonic oddities that the Milan producer and imprint head spawn are otherworldly, alien mind jammage woven in unknown synthetics and injected into the spine. Uncanny visitations filter through your senses as their ritualistic rhythms warp and shift, the organic and the digital merging in a breakdown of sonic physics.

Reinventing the lore of hardcore, the Italian duo DECLINO shape underground worlds with their own procedural design tools. Composed of game designer Alessandro Bertelle and architect Andrea Belosi, their work crosses the thresholds of broken metropoles and private servers to spin out worlds haunted by decay, infused with magick.

Programme

From 26 January – 4 February 2024, CTM Festival will celebrate a silver 25 year anniversary at Radialsystem, Berghain, silent green, and other Berlin venues.

CTM 2024 is titled "Sustain" – a weird and fascinating word that touches opposite polarities of the contemporary experience as it speaks of the empathy and determination through which we survive, as well as of our anxieties, losses, and pains. In the word "sustain" we sense both what we are going through while hearing what needs to be done. It is as much a description as it is an imperative as it is a vocation towards more interdependent ways of life. With its 2024 edition CTM Festival asks what if "sustain" were a sound? What would it be like? Music is not only a refuge, but also a constant reminder of our desire to get closer to the brighter end of the spectrum. Looking at musical life and music ecosystems under the perspective of "sustain", what ideals, ethics, and practices can we identify and discuss to make music a means to work towards something more sane, just, and sustainable?
