From tradition to the joy of creating something new: For the third concert evening as part of the "STOP OVER 2" series, the ensembles Marvin the Destroyer and the 20,000 Hour Band explore the history of jazz and translate the innovations of the past into the sound of the present.
On a sound journey through jazz history, forward-looking sounds are invented in this very moment. The evening's acts, featuring major figures from Berlin's improvisation scene, draw on music ranging from Ellington to cool jazz and hard bop. The 20,000 Hour Band presents new arrangements of timeless works by the legendary jazz composer Duke Ellington. The band project Marvin the Destroyer is also inspired by the traditions of "old jazz" as well as current dance styles such as Afro dance, krump and hip-hop. Through contemporary interpretations of well-known elements, ruptures and continuities in jazz are explored and illuminated anew. In keeping with the spirit of jazz, the concert evening encourages the joy of the shared moment again and again.
With "STOP OVER 2 - a concert series", the Radialsystem invites artists from the fields of jazz and improvised music to rethink concerts on four Sundays - and thus create spaces in which musicians and audiences can meet in a special way and experience music in a new way.

Das Bandprojekt Marvin the Destroyer setzt sich zusammen aus dem Tänzer und Choreografen Kofie da Vibe, der Künstlerin und Vibraphonistin Els Vandeweyer, dem Saxophonisten Daniel Erdmann und Vincent von Schlippenbach aka DJ Illvibe. Die Beteiligten arbeiten regelmäßig in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen zusammen, begegnen sich neu und schöpfen aus vorausgegangenen Repertoires. Wie die Bulldogge Marvin aus Jim Jarmuschs Film Paterson zerfetzt die Band Marvin The Destroyer regelmäßig das Entstandene, um Raum für Neues zu schaffen.
Um den 125. Geburtstag von Duke Ellington zu feiern, gründeten der Cellist Johannes Fink und die Pianistin Rieko Okuda die 20.000 Hour Band. Zusammen mit bekannten Musiker*innen der Berliner Improvisationsszene transportiert sie die Musik der Jazzlegende Duke Ellington in die 2020er Jahre. Mit spontanen Interpretationen bekannter sowie längst vergessener Stücke erzeugen sie mit ihren Arrangements jedes Mal einen neuen Sound.

„STOP OVER“ und das geplante Zentrum für Jazz und Improvisierte Musik
Die Veranstaltungsserie „STOP OVER“ besteht aus fünf Zwischenlandungen, die in fünf unterschiedlichen Formaten jeweils Teilbereiche eines künftigen Zentrums für Jazz und Improvisierte Musik erkunden. Nach „STOP OVER 1 – Improvising a Zentrum“ in der Alten Münze und dem jetzt stattfindenden „STOP OVER 2 – a concert series“ im Radialsystem sind an wechselnden Orten mit „STOP OVER 3 – eine Residency“, „STOP OVER 4“, das sich auf den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs fokussiert, und einem Festival 2025 weitere Zwischenlandungen – „STOP OVERs“ – geplant.
Seit 2016 wird in Berlin an einer neuartigen und klar profilierten Institution für Jazz, Improvisierte Musik und deren Schnittmengen mit anderen Formen aktueller Musik gearbeitet. Erstmals soll eine Ankerinstitution für Produktion, Präsentation, Forschung, Vernetzung, Diskurs und Vermittlung entstehen. Als innovative Kulturinstitution des 21. Jahrhunderts kann sie sich der praktischen und theoretischen Erforschung sowie der Weiterentwicklung transdisziplinärer und transkultureller Perspektiven für diese Musikformen widmen. Die Institution befindet sich im Sinne eines Zentrum under construction in der Aufbauphase.
