An invitation to an experimental concert: What do people actually experience during a concert? Why does music stir, inspire, and move us?
The distinguished up-and-coming Yubal Ensemble and the internationally renowned chamber music ensemble Epitaph – violinists Baiba Skride and Gergana Gergova, violists Micha Afkham and Amihai Grosz as well as cellist Alban Gerhardt – will perform string quintets by Ludwig van Beethoven, Brett Dean, and Johannes Brahms on a total of nine evenings at Radialsystem this spring. The musical program remains unchanged each evening; however, from one concert to the next, the same compositions are presented and dramatically altered in various ways – for example, through moderation, lighting design, audience participation, or a supplementary immersive level via video installations or acoustic amplification.
In the large-scale research project “Experimental Concert Research”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, researchers and musicians are getting to the bottom of the concert experience for the first time. Concertgoers are given insights into this unusual research project and will be able to explore their experience of the concert as test subjects. Using a specially designed combination of methods, they are both wired and interviewed – thereby being actively and passively involved in investigating their concert experience.
For the past four years, a European research team has been developing experimental psychological and sociological measurement instruments that are now being used extensively. Following a “sneak preview” in September 2020 and opening concerts in the Pierre Boulez Saal in mid-April 2022, the almost ten-day concert series, sponsored by the Aventis Foundation, will take place in Radialsystem.

Die preisgekrönte Geigerin Charlotte Chahuneau tritt neben ihrer Arbeit in renommierten Orchestern international solistisch sowie kammermusikalisch auf. Sie spielt eine Violine von Giovanni Battista Rogeri aus dem Jahre 1678 und einen Geigenbogen von Joseph Alfred Lamy, die ihr aus der Privatsammlung Helga Dyckerhoff von der Kulturstiftung Rheinland-Pfalz zur Verfügung gestellt werden.
Die als ausgezeichnetes Nachwuchstalent und herausragende Streichsolistin bekannte Violinistin Larissa Cidlinsky studierte u.a. am Mozarteum Salzburg und an der Juilliard School in New York. Sie war Konzertmeisterin der Philharmonie Salzburg und tritt mit Künstler*innen wie Fazil Say, Martin Beaver, Wen Xiao Zheng und dem Calidore Streichquartett auf.
Der Bratschist Friedemann Slenczka ist Mitglied der Akademie der Staatskapelle Berlin. Neben seiner solistischen Arbeit spielt er in verschiedenen Kammermusikformationen. Mit diesen ist er national wie international auf Festivals wie dem Podiumfestival Esslingen und dem Kyoto International Chamber Music Festival zu hören.
Die Bratschistin Martha Windhagauer studierte in Salzburg und München und war Akademistin bei der Staatskapelle Berlin unter Daniel Barenboim. Sie ist Mitglied des renommierten Giocoso String Quartet und tritt darüber hinaus solistisch und kammermusikalisch mit Musiker*innen wie Lynn Harrell, Jaap Ter Linden, Sergio Azzolini, Anton Barakhovsky, Lavard Skou Larsen und Avi Avital auf.
Die mehrfach preisgekrönte Cellistin Raphaela Paetsch spielt als Solistin mit dem Eroica Berlin Orchester und dem Hulencourt Symphony Orchestra aus Brüssel. Darüber hinaus konzertiert sie regelmäßig solistisch und kammermusikalisch mit zahlreichen Orchestern wie dem Neuen Sinfonieorchester Berlin und tritt bei internationalen Festivals auf.

What defines the concert experience in a concert of classical music today? Using a multi-method research design, this question will be investigated by the research project “Experimental Concert Research” in the setting of actual concerts.
Concertgoers are given insights into this unusual research project and will be able to explore their experience of the concert as test subjects. Registration for participation in the experiment takes place when booking a ticket.
