As part of the Voices Berlin Festival, pianist Dmitry Batalov will present four works from different aesthetic worlds, each sounding out the possibilities in expression and structure from their own period.
Batalov’s journey through piano music starts in the early romantic era and ends with the experimental avant-garde associated with the late 20th century. He invites the audience to enter into multiple soundscapes, in which the piano does not merely play the role of an instrument, but is a place of metamorphosis, introspection and conceptual exploration of acoustic potential. The piano concerto “Wanderer” invites both the interpreter and the audience to revisit the question of what music can be.
Helmut Lachenmann’s "Serynade“ (1998) radically reinvents how to piano can be played, serving as a foundation point for the programme. In this piece, traditional piano techniques take a step back, in favour of a thorough exploration of resonance, friction, and physical gesture. Giva Kanchelis wrote “Sarabande” (2018) one year before he died, focusing on conciseness and a sense of emotional restraint. This short work is permeated with careful expressiveness and spiritual depth, revealing Kanchelis’ signature style: calm, modal, defined as much by silence as it is by sound. Leonid Hrabovsky’s "Homeomorphy II“ (1968) presents a stark contrast, transmitting the logic of mathematical transformation into sound. Using topological concepts, Hrabovsky creates an austere, highly concentrated soundscape, in which small sound or rhythm cells are developed through subtle permutations. Franz Schubert’s "Fantasy in C Major, D 760“ ("Wanderer-Fantasie“, 1822) closes the programme with bold formal innovation and thematic coherence. The work integrates song, variation, fugue and sonata into a seamless whole over four overlapping movements.
