Marie Rosenkranz: Artistic Participation in Political Debates – The Cases of Post-Brexit London and Contemporary Berlin
Today, forms of activist artistic engagement are everywhere: in exhibitions, at art auctions in public space. They are no longer seen as "provocative", but belong to the mainstream of the arts and are highly institutionalized. This talk explores the activist turn in contemporary art by looking at artistic reactions to the Brexit referendum as well as a number of recent art activist initiatives in Berlin. Drawing from art and political theory, the talk analyzes how artists engage with and shape political realities today.
The series ‘Talks on Curatorial and Artistic Practice’ by the OnCurating Academy Berlin and Dorothee Richter, continues at Radialsystem from December 2024, carving out space for critical curatorial thinking as well as new perspectives and formats in the context of curatorial practices. The OnCurating Academy Berlin is an international postgraduate programme and platform that aims to strengthen the community of emerging curators, artists, and cultural workers.
The focus of the series builds upon the platform and the OnCurating postgraduate programme, and aligns with goal of (further) developing cooperative and interdisciplinary working methods. Curating means the creation of innovative structures toward the presentation of cultural artefacts through collaboration. In curatorial practice, art, digital media, design and architecture overlap in new ways that require constant reflection.

Biographies
Dr. Marie Rosenkranz arbeitet als Wissenschaftlerin an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin mit den Schwerpunkten Kultursoziologie, Sozialtheorie und Kunstsoziologie sowie an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Sie promovierte im Mai 2024 mit der Monografie „Contested Art: Artistic Activist Practices in the Context of Brexit”, erschienen bei Springer VS. Seit Juni 2020 ist sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin des Soziologen Prof. Andreas Reckwitz. Sie ist Co-Vorsitzende der Arbeitsgruppe Kunstsoziologie innerhalb der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie.
OnCurating Academy Berlin ist ein internationales Postgraduierten-programm für kuratorische Praxis und Theorie. Sie versteht sich als eine Lern-, Austausch und Weiterbildungsplattform, die mit hybriden Formaten, online und in Kollaboration mit Institutionen in Berlin, Raum für kritisches Kuratieren und neue Perspektiven auf kuratorische Praktiken schafft. Dabei spielen kollektive Formen des Kuratierens, die die Situiertheit von Wissen, die Dekolonialisierung von Kunstinstitutionen, digitale Medien, queer-feministische Perspektiven und Theorien sowie urbane und ökologische Entwicklungen in den Mittelpunkt stellen, entscheidende Rollen.
Dorothee Richter ist Autorin, Kuratorin und Professorin für Contemporary Curating der Fakultät für Bildende Kunst der Universität Reading. Sie ist Mitbegründerin der Plattform oncurating.org.
