Who composes? Who plays? On what? At Radialsystem, the theatre label Rimini Protokoll poses these questions in a new and humorous way with their production “SWEAT. A Musclical” and provides a suggestion:
fitness equipment - taken from the world of physical self-optimisation – transforms into music machines on stage. The concert evening “SWEAT. Songs of Push and Pull” presents pieces for this new category of instruments composed by the multi-disciplinary musicians Güner Künier, Brigitta Muntendorf, Schneider TM, Sophia Wind and Wooly Aziz and performed by the newly founded SWEAT ENSEMBLE. In the interactive walk-through installation “SWEAT MACHINES. Ein akustischer Spielplatz” (English: “an acoustic playground”), the audience can make the machine orchestra sing and get their own pulse racing.
The “Songs of Push and Pull” create a soundscape between fitness studio, pop and contemporary composition, a workout and a musical evening in one: To train the muscles now means to play music. The music machines are operated by the SWEAT Ensemble: people who are not necessarily musicians but have been unknowingly rehearsing for this moment by exercising on the original machines. They might have never played a concert before, but they have a precise feeling for their tendons and muscles thanks to regular training.
In the accompanying installation “SWEAT MACHINES. Ein akustischer Spielplatz” (English: “an acoustic playground”), the audience is invited to play the machine orchestra. Multilayered narratives unfold for visitors and participants via headphones and text-based media. The project is inspired by intensive research in Berlin and Luckenwalde in Brandenburg and interwoven with the protein-fuelled history of fitness culture.

Daniel Wetzel vom Theaterlabel Rimini Protokoll lebt seit 25 Arbeiten von Theater, Installation, Sound Design und Hörstücken. Zu den jüngsten Rimini-Arbeiten unter seiner Beteiligung gehören das dokumentarische Theaterstück „Futur4“ (2025), Ausstellung und Radiostück „Prinzip Held*“ (2024) und das Sounddesign für „ALTER EGO Raubkopie“ (P 2024-2025).
Die multidisziplinäre Künstlerin Güner Künier arbeitet in den Bereichen Musik, Film, Theater und bildende Kunst. Mit ihrem Solo-Musikprojekt veröffentlichte sie bereits mehrere EPs und Alben. Als Schauspielerin wirkte sie in Kurzfilmen, Fernseh- und Theaterproduktionen mit.
Die Komponistin Brigitta Muntendorf erforscht in transdigitalen Formaten gesellschaftliche Fragilität. Mit Konzepten wie Radical Listening, AI und 3D-Audio erschafft sie immersive Kompositionen und Musiktheater zwischen analogen und digitalen Welten. Sie ist Professorin an der HfMT Köln.
Schneider TM ist ein mehrdimensionales Musikprojekt von Dirk Dresselhaus, das sich zwischen experimentellem, elektronischem Avant-Pop und abstraktem, improvisatorischem Material bewegt. Schneider TM spielt international auf renommierten Festivals, darunter CTM Berlin, Sónar und Roskilde Festival.
In Sophia Winds Kompositionen verbinden sich sorgsam eingearbeitete Konzepte und kritisch ausgehandelte Narrationen zu einem immanenten Gefüge. Dabei betrachtet sie das Arbeiten mit Klang als Forschung, hingebend dafür, die Sinnlichkeit in Alltäglichem zum Sprechen zu bringen.
Wooly Aziz ist ein genreübergreifendes Projekt von Jannat Sohail aus Lahore, Pakistan, das Geschichten von Migration, Krieg, Euphorie und Verlust komponiert. Mit atmosphärischen Kompositionen und „wistful vocals“ (Rolling Stone) verortet sich Wooly Aziz im emotionalen Feld kolonialer und geografischer Spuren.

The production ‘SWEAT. A Musclical’ consists of the installation ’SWEAT MACHINES. An Acoustic Playground’ and the concert ’SWEAT. Songs of Push and Pull’, which will be presented on 7 and 10 August.
The concert ‘SWEAT. Songs of Push and Pull’ has a duration of approx. 75 minutes.
