On four summer evenings, Radialsystem presents the world premiere of “STEIN”, the new choreography by legendary New York dance icon Lucinda Childs and the Dance On Ensemble. Childs, as well as artist Hans Peter Kuhn and award winning dancer and choreographer Miki Orihara use as the point of departure for their artistic reflexion a text by writer Gertrude Stein – one of the first women of classical literary modernism. Artist and composer Hans Peter Kuhn designs a video piece for the stage, accompanied by a sound composition based around noises and piano improvisation. “STEIN” is the second production by the Dance On Ensemble in their series “Encounters”, in which choreographers themselves take to the stage and develop a choreography together with dancers from the ensemble.
The evening begins with three works by Lucinda Childs from the 1970s, as presented by the Dance On Ensemble: “Untitled Trio,” “Radial Courses,” and “Interior Drama”.
Dancer and choreographer Lucinda Childs has enjoyed a long and impressive artistic career that includes collaboration with such renowned artists as Robert Wilson and Philip Glass. Childs has received numerous awards for her works, which explore the mutability of space and the manipulation of time. In “STEIN,” the choreographer reflects on her earlier works through the perspective of her decades of experience. She is joined by Miki Orihara of the Dance On Ensemble, a company composed exclusively of professional dancers over the age of 40. At once powerful and sensitive, Orihara was principal dancer with the Martha Graham Company for many years. She has also worked with such artists as Robert Wilson, and danced in Broadway productions.

Das Dance On Ensemble ist eine professionelle Company für Tänzer*innen über 40. Es wurde von der gemeinnützigen Kulturorganisation Bureau Ritter 2015 als Teil der Dance On Initiative gegründet, die die künstlerische Beziehung zwischen Tanz und Alter sowohl auf der Bühne als auch in der Gesellschaft thematisiert. Seither arbeitet das Ensemble mit international renommierten Choreograf*innen und Regisseur*innen zusammen, darunter Rabih Mroué, Lucinda Childs, Christos Papadopoulos, Meg Stuart und Jan Martens. Ziel ist es, ein Repertoire innovativer und anspruchsvoller zeitgenössischer Tanzwerke für Profitänzer*innen ab 40 Jahren zu entwickeln und eine nachhaltige Arbeitsperspektive für sie zu schaffen. Die Produktionen touren international und werden vom Publikum gefeiert. Derzeit versammelt das Dance On Ensemble 14 Tänzer*innen aus 10 Nationen, der künstlerische Leiter ist Ty Boomershine.
Lucinda Childs begann ihre Karriere als Choreografin und Performerin 1963 als Gründungsmitglied des Judson Dance Theater in New York. 1973 gründete Childs ihre eigene Tanzkompanie und arbeitete zusammen mit Robert Wilson und Philip Glass an der Oper „Einstein on the Beach“ , wofür sie mit einem Obie Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Sie erhielt 1979 ein Guggenheim-Stipendium und wurde außerdem mit dem NEA/NEFA American Masterpiece Award ausgezeichnet. 2004 erhielt Lucinda Childs den französischen Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, 2017 den Samuel H. Scripps Award für ihr Lebenswerk sowie den Golden Lion Award der Biennale de la Danse in Venedig.
Miki Orihara war mehr als 25 Jahre lang Erste Solistin der Martha Graham Dance Company und wurde 2010 für diese Arbeit mit einem Bessie Award geehrt. Sie hat in der Broadway-Produktion „The King and I“ getanzt und mit Elisa Monte, PierGroupDance, Lotuslotus, Rioult Dance, Twyla Tharp, Martha Clarke, Anne Bogart (SITI Company) und Robert Wilson zusammengearbeitet. Ihre eigenen Choreografien wurden in New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam und in Japan gezeigt. 2017 und 2018 wurde sie eingeladen, bei den Vereinten Nationen zu tanzen.
Hans Peter Kuhn, Komponist und Künstler, lebt in Berlin und Japan. Seine Licht- und Klanginstallationen werden weltweit in Museen und Galerien oder im öffentlichen Raum gezeigt, u.a. im Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Centre Pompidou Paris, Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, Tokushima Modern Art Museum. Die Installation „Memory Loss“ von Robert Wilson und Hans Peter Kuhn wurde 1993 in Venedig mit dem Goldenen Löwen ausgezeichnet. Er komponierte die Musik für Laurie Booth, Dana Reitz, Suzushi Hanayagim, Sasha Waltz und Junko Wada und erhielt dafür den Bessie Award und den Suzukinu Hanayagi Award Osaka. Mit Lucinda Childs arbeitet er seit vielen Jahren u.a. in Produktionen von Robert Wilson zusammen.
Die Reihe „Encounters” des Dance On Ensembles reflektiert die traditionellen Rollen von Choreograf*innen und Tänzer*innen, indem sie den Tänzer*innen die Co-Autorenschaft übergibt und gemeinsame kreative Prozesse sowie die Beziehung zwischen Choreografie und Interpretation erforscht.
