In early July, Sasha Waltz & Guests bring their renowned choreography “In C” to Radialsystem once again, with a live performance of Terry Riley’s composition by the ensemble Musikfabrik. As part of a collaboration between Sasha Waltz & Guests and tanzmainz, the performances feature dancers from both ensembles.
Sasha Waltz's colourful expedition into the world of minimal music is based on Terry Riley's revolutionary and open composition of the same name. In the spring of 2021, the choreographer developed choreographic material alongside 10 dancers that follows a varying structure similar to the piece, thereby leaving space for infinitely new variations. “In C” comprises an experimental process in constant evolution that develops further the long-standing artistic approach tried and tested by Sasha Waltz & Guests, as well as the dialogue between dance, music, and space, in both digital and analogue contexts
„The score of „In C“ consists of fifty-three musical phrases and reads like stage directions for musicians. The thought of translating these detailed instructions into dance through a choreographic exploration of the music appealed to me. The result is an experimental system of fifty-three movement phrases for a structured improvisation with clear rules and laws. The length of the piece remains variable, as does the number of musicians and dancers.“

tanzmainz meets Sasha Waltz & Guests
The two companies Sasha Waltz & Guests and tanzmainz have teamed up for the first time to present a multi-part project throughout 2025: in March, dancers from both ensembles kicked off the tanzmainz festival #5 with a joint performance of Sasha Waltz's choreography “In C” set to Terry Riley’s music. The festival also featured Sasha Waltz & Guests’ production “Beethoven 7”, which has been extensively toured, with live musical accompaniment by the Mainz Philharmonic State Orchestra. In July, Radialsystem hosts joint performances of “In C” with dancers from both ensembles. tanzmainz's guest performance of Moritz Ostruschnjak's outstanding piece “Trailer Park” at Tanz im August marks the conclusion of this extraordinary collaboration
