UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound
The series “UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound”, which will take place from May 2026 to February 2027 at Radialsystem, explores the plural knowledge of dance, body, and sound. Interdisciplinary perspectives and practitioners from the African continent, the diaspora, and beyond will engage in dialogue with Berlin's dynamic dance scene.
The focus is on the social and political dimensions of dance, knowledge systems in music, the body as a living archive, movement as healing, a decolonial perspective on the body and dance, and a critical examination of global dance history. Performances, talks, listening sessions, and workshops transform knowledge into experience and movement.
The series is curated by Isabel Raabe (artistic direction) and Celina Baljeet Basra (co-curation) and is academically supported by Dr. Mariama Diagne. “UNEXPECTED LESSONS” is part of TALKING OBJECTS LAB, an artistic research project that has been running since 2020. The LAB explores knowledge beyond Eurocentric systems of knowledge, led by a team of international curators from Senegal, Kenya and Germany. www.talkingobjectslab.org
The series ‘UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound’ is supported by the LOTTO Foundation Berlin. In collaboration with the Betty Centre for Movement Research at the Department of Dance Studies, LMU Munich. An event as part of the TALKING OBJECTS LAB.

UNEXPECTED LESSONS 3 – Rethinking Dance in Academia
Instead of simply exploring how we research dance, we ask how dance changes our view of what we call “research”? In the “UNEXPECTED LESSONS - Knowledges of Body and Sound” series, Sandra Noeth and Mariama Diagne (who are both professors in dance and performance research in German universities) explore how dance has shaped an academic area of research over time: as a practice, an art form and a field of discourse. We present “Rethinking Dance in Academia” as part of “20 Jahre Radialsystem”.

UNEXPECTED LESSONS 4 – Decolonizing the Body in Dance
As part of the “UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound” series at Radialsystem, Dr. Rajyashree Ramesh, Martha Hincapié Charry and Sage Ni‘Ja Whitson portray the body as a living archive in workshops and lecture performances, in which history, knowledge, and environment meet. In “Decolonizing the Body in Dance”, which we are presenting as part of “20 Jahre Radialsystem”, movement becomes a practice of reconnection, and an act of resistance and resilience.
