What musical expression would the humanist message of the "Ode to Joy" take if it were rewritten today, more than 200 years after its composition? What meaning does joy carry in the 21st century? At the end of October, composer Cathy Milliken and voice teacher Lucia Duchoňová premiere a multi-channel sound installation at radialsystem, as part of the programme, "The other Beethoven(s)", initiated by the Goethe Institute. The installation will further develop the text and melody of "Ode to Joy", drawing out new sounds. A collective choir project has brought about an "Ode for All”, collectively composed and performed by six women's choirs of different singing traditions from Bosnia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Cyprus and Romania.

The other Beethoven(s)
The 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven is also commemorated by the Goethe Institute 2020 : The global project, "The other Beethoven(s)", sheds light on an unknown side of the Bonn composer. Based on his interest in non-European perspectives, which was awakened in the later years of his life, artists and composers from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Germany trace this cosmopolitanism toward a translation of his work into a new, contemporary language. The result is a series of concerts, installations, and performances on display in Germany and participating countries from 2020 onwards. With Cathy Milliken's "Ode for All", and the installation, "Covered Culture", by Brigitta Muntendorf and Felix Lobeck, the premieres of two of these productions are hosted by radialsystem in Berlin. In addition, the series, "Outernational", by Elisa Erkelenz is to be shown as well, along with a concert by the Trickster Orchestra, "Disturbing the Universal", as part of the Berlin mini programme.
