ARTE concert 21 12 2020, 8 pm: Force & Freedom: Beethoven between Force and Freedom
On ARTE Concert, Nico and the Navigators, together with the Kuss Quartet, will premiere their new production “Force & Freedom” on December 21st. With the Staged Concert they dedicate themselves – in the 250th year of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth – to the life and work of the great composer. The film recordings are produced in cooperation with EuroArts.
How is one to imagine Ludwig van Beethoven’s final works with all of one’s senses? How much courage is required to ride that roller-coaster of emotion – pain and loss, longing and love, anger and hope? How have these sensations changed in the here and now? And how do they relate to current experiences? For the composer’s 250th birthday, Nico and the Navigators and the Kuss Quartet have set out on a quest, running the gamut from historical sources to one’s own experience. This is gripping, sensual music theatre of the highest musical standard.
Force and freedom are the poles between which the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven can be positioned. This is exemplified in his late string quartets, which transcend the boundaries of form; he becomes fragile, reaching never-before-seen heights of freedom and radicalism. Shortly after the intensive rehearsal period began in spring 2020, the coronavirus pandemic made this topic relevant in a previously inconceivable way – the unimaginable became a reality. The world premiere that had been planned for the Schwetzingen Festival had to be cancelled. A joint video diary was then created out of the involuntary isolation of the ensemble, bringing together individual associations and previously researched material, and which will intellectually enhance the evening on a medial level.
