Hanno Leichtmann: NOUVELLES AVENTURES
In 2016, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Internationalen Darmstädter Ferienkurse (the Darmstadt Summer Course) and the affiliated HISTORAGE project, access to the complete archives that had been painstakingly digitized were given to seven international artists for use as a source for their work, a group which included Hanno Leichtmann. With NOUVELLES AVENTURES, the Berlin sound artist took a distinctive approach to the task: as in his other installations, he distils his sound material exclusively from a thematically defined (sound) archive. In this case, this is made up of concert recordings, lectures, and discussions from 70 years of New Music history. The subjectively selected sounds are sent through Leichtmann’s unique machinery of voltage-controlled (micro) loops and recorded. They are then assembled in the studio to form the current installation or audio play . Leichtmann directs his concentration toward the original, pure sound of the archive, primarily adhering to the classical parameters of early electronic (reel-to-reel) music; for example, amplitude, pitch and speed, direction of play, splicing together and cutting, and above all, repetition.
Hanno Leichtmann has revised the sound installation originally planned for the six-channel presentation in December 2020 and adapted it to the new premises. Due to the current situation, this mix and the film will be available on the radar at www.radialsystem.de for a period of 70 days from February 5th.
